With COVID-19 taking a big toll on Australians, consumers more than ever before in history have been turning to electronic devices to accommodate every component of their lives, with the NBN revealing that daytime internet usage increased by 70-80% in the months after COVID-19 first hit.
As we plan for 2021 and anticipate even more ambitious resolutions given people’s experiences throughout the pandemic, Collins have partnered with leading Australian experts from across the fitness, finance and wellbeing industries to help provide their top insights into how you can set and maintain these resolutions well into the New Year.
A virtual event was held with Wellness coach Sally Flower, finance educator Vanessa Stoykov and stand-in wellness advice given by Ed Kavalee (on behalf of his wife Tiffany Hall who was unavailable).
FITNESS tips – Tiffany Hall
TIP 1# – SET RITUALS: MAKE YOUR SURROUNDINGS MAKE YOU MOVE!
Find routines that support your tracking and accountability. Place your running shoes at the front door so you have a visual reminder to go for that run. Lay out your workout clothes the night before.
How can you improve your sleep hygiene – a good night sleep = a great wake up call. Try to work out at the same time every day to build routine like brushing your teeth.
How can you organise your calendar to allow for routine self-care and exercise?
TIP 2# – CREATE A DIMS/SIMS CALENDAR
I’m a CEO and a mum of a 3-year-old, so life can be pretty hectic. One way I organise my calendar to make sure I’m achieving work/health balance is to colour code it.
Green = self-care/relaxation/mental and physical recovery.
Red = high stress and this can be mental or physical high stress.
RED I call DIMS (drainers in me) and GREEN I call SIMS (safety in me). Life can be categorised into dims and sims. People can be dims and sims. Environments, situations, everything is either a dim or a sim. Red or Green.
Each week I sit down and look at my calendar and colour the events that are high stress such (DIMS) i.e. some of my training sessions, meetings, zooms, anything cognitively stressful or physically demanding. And then I try to build relaxation activities around the red so that there is recovery, these self-care relaxation activities I code Green (SIMS). For example, if I have 4 hours of meetings in a day, after the meetings, I schedule green time – it can be anything that relaxes you. This way you don’t overload your nervous system. You’re triggering the vagus nerve that helps to stimulate the parasympathetic relaxation response in your body.
TIP #3 – Inch Pebbles, Not Milestones
When you set goals, within your larger goal you should schedule in smaller, confidence-building goals that are achievable in a shorter time period. For example, say you want to run 5km. During your training, you should make a smaller goal, like running for 1 minute without stopping, to both show yourself how much you’ve accomplished, and assess where you currently are.
And you should always track and analyse these goals as you go, the same you would with work goals and KPIs. When it comes to fitness and health, people tend to be so impatient and abandon planning altogether, but fitness and health take as much planning and checking in as any other goal. It’s all about those little victories. You want to be able to reward yourself mentally, so remember, inch pebbles, not milestones.
Financial tips – Vanessa Stoykov
TIP 1# – SET ANNUAL GOALS TO DECREASE DEBT AND INVEST IN THE GOOD THINGS
When looking at your annual goals, look at investing your money where it brings you joy. When I say invest money, I also mean invest it in yourself. The only thing that will suck that joy out is debt. But when you know what you want, then you can move forward. Decide what financial goals you want to aim for across the year and then set 3-6-month goals to help you transform your money for the long term.
TIP 2# – SET QUARTERLY GOALS BY GETTING YOUR BUDGET IN ORDER
This is the area of your life where you can start to write down the nitty gritty financial goals. Start by asking yourself, ‘do you know how much it costs to make your life run?’ Once you understand your total cost to run, what debt you’re in, and your total asset value, list these out and understand your position against each. Once you know your position is, then you can start to plan for change. Use great platforms like Moneysmart.gov.au to breakdown your expenses, map out a course of action and monitor your progress over the quarter.
TIP 3# – SET MONTHLY GOALS AND CONTINUALLY RE-ASSESS
By writing your costs and financial goals down in a diary or financial tracker, this allows you to continually measure and re-assess your progress. By evaluating things monthly, you can see where budgets fluctuate, where your weak points are and what habits you’re building. If things blow out one month, that’s fine, but maybe re-evaluate your process and make any necessary changes. Only through looking at your habits, can you plan for change and set
yourself up for success.
TIP 4# – SET WEEKLY GOALS AND CELEBRATE THE WINS
Create macro goals for your finances that you can celebrate when you achieve them. Unfortunately, you will not ‘win’ your money quickly. Financials are not like weight loss. You need to celebrate when you are doing well and do it on a weekly basis. Get into habits of checking your banking apps daily, pay your debts in small increments and be sure to spend money for things that you can afford to pay back…and then reward yourself for sticking to this!

Tip 1# – Make a 2020 Reflection
Start by making a 2020 reflection list with the things you have learnt, missed, loved and want to do more of. Be sure to categorise these into career, relationships and personal sects, and use this as a guide to figure out how to plan for the New Year. From here, remove whatever you disliked, add more of what you missed/loved doing and set yourself measurable goals to help you maintain these changes for the long term.
Tip #2 – Set A Daily Routine
Help realise your goals and live out a fulfilling 2021 by creating space to support healthy habits. Take time to notice where clutter builds in your life, through journaling or mindful note-taking so you can uncover where both mental and physical clutter can be
simplified to support you in realising your 2021 goals. Don’t aim for perfection, but instead aim for simplicity and fulfilment. Order is a poor substitute for happiness, take the time to rethink your to-do lists, write them down in a notebook or diary and get them out of your head. This will clear mental clutter and you can then focus on achieving your goals and ticking things of your daily lists.
Tip #3 – Be Sure to Celebrate
Writing lists and getting information out of your head onto paper is very important as it helps clear mental space, but it is equally as important to celebrate when you complete a task. While it’s true, some to-do lists are endless, it’s important that we focus less on getting to the end of it, but instead focus more on our accomplishments. Positive thoughts drive positive outcomes. Organisation is a tool to lead a simple and fulfilling life and a way that can lead us to our best selves.
