Zoo Twilights 2020
Melbourne Zoo has announced that its annual summer concert series, Zoo Twilights, will return from 24 January to 7 March 2020, with landmark composer and universally adored singer-songwriter, Randy Newman the first artist to be revealed for the 2020 program.
Winner of seven Grammys, three Emmys and two Academy awards, Newman has lent his unmistakable voice to some of the most loved screen classics of the past half-century. An Evening With Randy Newman will see the celebrated artist perform from a repertoire that includes music from the Toy Story series, A Bug’s Life and Monsters Inc, as well as material from his critically acclaimed 2017 album Dark Matter, in the most special of settings – providing the perfect soundtrack to a summer night under the stars at Melbourne Zoo.
Described by Pitchfork as a songwriter whose music “leaves you wondering where you stand, what you think, what you believe and how the world works”, Newman has spanned generations and music genres like few other artists.
To date, his 1968 hit ‘I Think It’s Going to Rain Today’ has been covered by more than 50 artists including Nina Simone, Peter Gabriel and Norah Jones, while recent collaborations with Chance the Rapper and Rex Orange County illustrate his enduring relevance. For Melburnians, the performance offers music lovers of all ages the chance to witness a music icon in one of Australia’s most idyllic and family friendly concert settings.
And it’s good music for a good cause, with all proceeds from the 2020 program going to initiatives that work towards ensuring the survival of the adorable, but critically endangered, Mountain Pygmy-possum – Australia’s only hibernating marsupial.
With just 2,000 Mountain Pygmy-possums remaining in the wild, the species is at risk after its main food source, the migrating Bogong Moth, failed to appear in the possum’s Victorian Alps home for the second year. The plight of the possum is at the centre of Zoos Victoria’s ‘Lights Off for Moths’ campaign, which encourages Australians to switch off their outdoor lights at night to avoid interrupting the moths’ traditional migration.

The full 2020 Zoo Twilights line-up will be announced on 16 October 2019.
Every weekend from 24 January – 7 March 2020
After selling out her first show in two minutes, and a second show just hours later, Missy Higgins has added a third and final show on Sunday 9 February, while a second show has been added for The Cat Empire on Saturday 15 February, and ICEHOUSE on Saturday 26 January.
There has been huge support right across the program which features performances from the genre-defining Jamaican reggae legends, Toots & The Maytals; influential US gospel, soul and R&B queen, Mavis Staples; the Perth art-rockers that NME dubbed as “the new pop masters,” Methyl Ethel, and the legendary US songwriter and film composer Randy Newman, plus many more.
Regarded as one of Melbourne’s must-see summer music events, Zoo Twilights will once again showcase a diverse mix of top local and international acts in Melbourne Zoo’s breathtaking open-air surrounds. The iconic outdoor concert series for all ages will run each weekend from 24 January to 7 March, with all proceeds from this year’s series going towards Zoos Victoria’s efforts to save the critically endangered Mountain Pygmy-possum from extinction.
Zoo Twilights invites concert-goers to pick a spot under the stars on Melbourne Zoo’s lawns for an unforgettable night of music. Taste of Twilights, a huddle of some of the city’s best food trucks and pop-up bars, neighbours the stage and serves up brews, snacks and street food. Zoo Twilights is an all-ages event.
