Summer action at Flemington

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) is gearing up for a sensational summer of racing, with Flemington to play host to six race days across December, January and February.

In a first for Flemington, the summer action will kick off with the December Twilight Race Day on Saturday 14 December, one of three new twilight race days on the summer calendar.

December Twilight Race Day will provide racegoers with a chance to experience racing at headquarters like never before, with gates opening at a later time of 2.00pm with the first race to be run at 3.00pm.

Racegoers can enjoy all the food, entertainment and racing action throughout the afternoon and into the evening including dinner service, with the last race set to jump at 8.00pm. The Club Stand’s spectacular Roof Garden will be the place to be for members looking to soak up the summer sunshine and take in all the action from one of Melbourne’s most impressive rooftop venues. Best of all The Roof Garden and G.H.Mumm Champagne Bar will be open until 9pm, for all members to enjoy the famous Flemington hospitality.

For those looking to get into the festive spirit, Christmas Race Day on Saturday 21 December will be the perfect opportunity to connect with friends and family, featuring a special appearance from Santa Claus and an array of Christmas-themed activities.

This day will also be free for the local community. Residents of Flemington, Kensington, Ascot Vale, Maribyrnong and Footscray will have the opportunity to join the festive celebrations free of charge, receiving complimentary racecourse entry on Christmas Race Day.

The gates to Australia’s premier racing destination will also open on the first day of the new year for New Year’s Race Day on Wednesday 1 January, where racegoers can enjoy a casual picnic on the Front Lawn or continue the new year celebrations at a number of venues across course.

Black-type summer racing will continue with Chester Manifold Stakes Day on Saturday 11 January, where a quality line up of off-season gallopers will compete in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m).

Flemington will host its second summer twilight race day on Saturday 18 January with January Twilight Race Day, where racegoers can take in all the racing action until sundown.

The last day on the VRC’s summer racing calendar will be Summer Twilight Race Day on Saturday 9 February, featuring another later start to the nine-race card.

VRC Executive General Manager – Customer Engagement Caroline Ralphsmith said the summer racing calendar at Flemington is sure to please racegoers of all ages and interests.

“With a successful 2019 Melbourne Cup Carnival behind us, the VRC looks forward hosting six fantastic summer race days from December to February,” Ms Ralphsmith said.

“We are also thrilled to introduce twilight racing at Flemington as part of the summer calendar. People can get their Christmas shopping done in the morning before heading to Flemington to experience summer racing like never before.

“We look forward to celebrating with the broader Flemington community and are delighted to extend free entry on Christmas Raceday to residents in the surrounding suburbs of Flemington.

“Summer is a time to spend with family and friends and we welcome new and existing racegoers to relax under the sunshine at Flemington while enjoying the skill of our marvellous equine athletes on the track.”

December Twilight Race Day

In an innovative move by the Victoria Racing Club (VRC), Flemington will host its first ever twilight race meeting on Saturday 14 December.

Gates will open at a later time of 2.00pm with the first race to be run at 3.00pm. Racegoers can enjoy a range of food, entertainment and racing action throughout the afternoon and into the evening, with the nine-race card set to conclude at 8.00pm.

Summer on the Roof Garden will be the place to be for members looking to soak up the sunshine, featuring a pop-up cocktail bar and live music. Guests can also continue the celebrations after the last when the spacious deck and inside bar stays open for extended hours.

The Front Lawn will be the perfect place for families to enjoy the day, featuring free children’s activities, including face painting, and a soft play area for the little ones.

Two Christmas Giving Trees will be located on course in support of The Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal, which will provide gifts to those in need this festive season. VRC members are encouraged to bring unwrapped gifts and donate them at one of two Christmas giving trees located in The Lobby of The Club Stand, as well as The Atrium in The Grandstand.

Racegoers can also head to the horse stalls and meet Living Legends Brew and Good Ba Ba once gates open.

Christmas Race Day

Melburnians will have the opportunity to start their Christmas celebrations early at Flemington’s Christmas Race Day on Saturday 21 December, with free entry for locals.

The last Flemington race day for 2019 will feature nine races and an abundance of family friendly activities. Santa Claus will delight racegoers when he arrives in style on Flemington’s famous Front Lawn just days before his biggest day of the year.

Children will be able to experience a special moment with the jolly big man and families can capture a photographic memento.

Residents from the suburbs of Flemington and Kensington (3031), Ascot Vale and Maribyrnong (3032) and Footscray (3011) will receive complimentary racecourse entry. Simply present ID showing your postcode at the entrance gates.

Adding to the off the track entertainment, Candy Cane Lane will be located on the west end of the Front Lawn, where kids can visit Mrs Claus’ Bakery and Santa’s Stables. Racegoers will also be treated to Christmas carollers roaming the racecourse singing festive tunes.

Inspired by the coastal town of Cape Cod in the USA, The Surf & Turf Shack will take prime position on the Front Lawn, serving up seafood specials plus BBQ delights for all racegoers.

VRC members and guests can sip refreshing cocktails while listening to laid-back acoustic tunes on The Balcony Bar and enjoy dazzling city views and DJ tunes as the sun sets from The Roof Garden.

Gates open at 11.55am and Race 1 is at 12.55pm.

New Year’s Race Day

Enjoy the first day of the new year with New Year’s Race Day at Flemington on Wednesday 1 January. The day will provide the perfect opportunity to continue the new year festivities, with a nine-race card highlighted by the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) and the Listed Bagot Handicap (2800m).

Racegoers can enjoy delicious cocktails and scrumptious food offerings on the Front Lawn at The Surf & Turf Shack, while VRC members and guests can chill out to laid-back acoustic tunes on the Balcony Bar in The Atrium.

Members can also keep their new year celebrations going after the last with extended hours in The Roof Garden and G.H.Mumm Champagne Bar, with both bars open until 7.30pm.

For those looking to ease their way into the new year, Relax on The Lawn will be the place to be, featuring acoustic music, day beds, hydration stations, Bloody Marys and share plates.

Free kids’ activities will also take place on the west end of the Front Lawn, including balloon artists, face painting and lawn games.

Former champion and dual Flemington Group 1 winner Zipping will join Hong Kong’s favourite galloper of recent times Bullish Luck on New Year’s Race Day in the mounting yard and horse stalls.

Gates open at 12.15pm and Race 1 is at 1.15pm.

Chester Manifold Stakes Day

Black-type summer racing will continue at Flemington with Chester Manifold Stakes Day on Saturday 11 January, where a quality line up of off-season gallopers will compete in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m).

Racegoers can set up a picnic on Flemington’s famous Front Lawn or enjoy seafood specials and BBQ delights from The Surf & Turf Shack while taking in all the racing action.

Parents and children will also have the opportunity to participate in free children’s activities on the west end of the Front Lawn, including lawn games, face painting, hobby horse races and more.

Racegoers can also take in every race finish from The Lounge, located directly behind the West Front Lawn offering premium views of the Winning Post.

VRC members and guests can sip refreshing cocktails while listening to laid-back acoustic tunes on The Balcony Bar and enjoy dazzling city views and DJ tunes as the sun sets from The Roof Garden, which will run for extended hours after the last.

January Twilight Race Day

The second twilight meeting on the summer calendar, January Twilight Raceday on Saturday 18 January will feature a nine-race card including the running of the Listed Kensington Stakes (1000m).

Children can enjoy the free activities on the west end of the Front Lawn while the adults can kick back at The Surf & Turf Shack and enjoy seafood specials, BBQ delights and acoustic tunes.

VRC members can enjoy all the racing action from Summer on the Roof Garden, featuring a pop-up cocktail bar and live music. Guests can also continue the celebrations after the last when the spacious deck and inside bar stays open for extended hours.

Former champion and dual Flemington Group 1 winner Rogan Josh will join Tasmania’s favourite galloper of recent times The Cleaner on January Race Day in the mounting yard and horse stalls. Trained by legendary trainer Bart Cummings, Rogan Josh won the 1999 Mackinnon Stakes on Derby Day before winning the Melbourne Cup three days later, while The Cleaner was best known for his bold front-running style that saw him win a remarkable 19 races and over $1.3 million in prizemoney.

Flemington’s famous Front Lawn will feature The Surf & Turf Shack, a Cape Cod-inspired bar which will serve up seafood specials, delicious cocktails and BBQ delights for all racegoers.

Free children’s activities will also take place on the west end of the Front Lawn, including a soft play area for the little ones, arts and crafts and movies on the lawn.
