IMG ANNOUNCES FINALISTS FOR THE 2019 AUSTRALIAN FASHION LAUREATE
IMG has announced the finalists for the Australian Fashion Laureate, celebrating individuals who have made a significant contribution to the growth, development and global promotion of the Australian fashion industry. Winners will be announced on 23 October at a celebratory luncheon at Café Sydney on Sydney Harbour.
Established by IMG and the New South Wales Government – through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW – in 2008, the Australian Fashion Laureate rewards and recognizes the achievements and exceptional creative talent of the Australian fashion industry. As the pinnacle fashion industry honour, the Australian Fashion Laureate category gives consideration to persons who have, over time, made a significant contribution to the growth and development of the Australian fashion industry. Past lifetime achievement award recipients include Edwina McCann, Dion Lee, Zimmermann and Carla Zampatti.
Additional Australian Fashion Laureate awards recognize accomplishments across categories including Womenswear, Menswear, Retailer, Accessories, Model of the Year, Outstanding Creative and Emerging Talent.
The Emerging Talent award will be presented by Etihad Airways, showcasing support for the next generation of Australian fashion designers as a partner of the global fashion industry; the winner will receive two business class tickets from Australia to anywhere within Etihad Airways’ global network.
A new category, Sustainable Innovation, has been introduced in 2019 to recognize brands that are pioneering best practices, implementing long-term strategic goals, or otherwise demonstrating leadership in sustainability. The inaugural Sustainable Innovation award will be presented by GlamCorner, Australia’s leading online designer fashion rental service.
“With the introduction of the Sustainable Innovation award, we are celebrating the Australian industry’s growing dedication to lessening fashion’s impact on our environment,” states Natalie Xenita, Executive Director of IMG’s fashion group in Australia. “This award category complements our existing accolades, which not only celebrate Australia’s exceptional talent, but highlight the most noteworthy innovations shaping our industry and its future.”
Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayres said the prestigious event had a fitting home in Sydney: “There’s no doubt that Sydney is the fashion capital of Australia, and the esteemed Australian Fashion Laureate brings together the best in the business here in the Harbour City to celebrate and cast forward. As the strategic sponsor of the Australian Fashion Laureate, the NSW Government is proud to support an industry that builds the profile and creative spirit of our city. We know the global fashion community will have all eyes on Sydney to see who the 2019 innovators, leaders and change makers are when the awards are presented in October.”
Australian Fashion Laureate recipients are nominated and chosen by a voting panel of more than 30 industry leaders, including media, buyers, communications professionals, brand executives, creatives and designers, called the Australian Fashion Industry Alumni.
