Iconic Sydney venue hosts adidas x Parley tennis collection for Australian Open
The beauty that is the Icebergs Ocean Pool in Bondi, Sydney has been transformed into a tennis court to host the launch of the adidas x Parley tennis collection for the Australian Open.
Taking advantage of the already planned cleaning session of the pool, which requires the pool to be empty for half a day, a tennis court was installed where a host of special guests were practising their tennis skills to Play for the Oceans alongside the iconic Bondi Beach.
The location was chosen to offer a stunning Ocean backdrop for the launch of the eco-innovative adidas Tennis x Parley collection, which aims to create change and inspire the industry, athletes, spectators and fans to better protect the Oceans. Apparel and footwear are made with Parley Ocean Plastic — materials created from upcycled plastic waste intercepted from beaches and in coastal communities – helping turn threat into thread, combat marine plastic pollution, raise awareness and champion eco-innovative solutions to one of today’s most pressing environmental issues.
The collection will be debuted on court at the upcoming Australian Open with leading players including Alexander Zverev, Caroline Wozniacki, Angelique Kerber, Jelena Ostapenko, Lucas Pouille, Dominic Thiem and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. During the event, adidas ambassadors including Ian Thorpe, Ana Ivanovic and Beau Ryan shared their love for the Oceans and the need to protect them – and later moved to the bottom of the pool where they enjoyed themselves playing tennis wearing the new collection.
At the completion of the launch, the tennis court was disassembled and transported to a local Sydney school where it will be installed for children to enjoy when school resumes later this month.
Adidas spokesperson Shannon Morgan said: “It is very exciting to bring the adidas x Parley collaboration to the city of Sydney during the Australian Open – given the coastal landscape of Sydney – and to use the collection as a symbol to raise awareness about the need to protect our Oceans”. Since 2015, adidas and Parley have collaborated to raise awareness, help end marine plastic pollution and drive creative ideas that can change the future of sport, the industry and better protect our planet.
Founder of Parley for the Oceans, Cyrill Gutsch said: “Adidas has been our ally, our family, since we started. But Tennis now joining the movement with this A-team of outstanding players adds a new layer to the Parley network. Together, we are not only turning the 2019 Australian Open into a campaign for the oceans, we are inviting a new layer of society to become activists: the global tennis community. With all its style, performance and meaning.”
Alexander Zverev commented: “Melbourne is one of my favourite cities, I love playing here and being close to the ocean. That’s why I’m excited by this collaboration between adidas and Parley for the Oceans – this collection looks great and has all of the technical features to support my performance on court but is also part of a movement to create change and protect the oceans.”
