Sunset Sounds 2019
Sunset Sounds returns in 2019 featuring Horns of Leroy, Vaudeville Smash, Thando, The Twoks, The Seven Ups and The Meltdown. Kicking off on Sunday 6 January, Sunset Sounds is a free all-ages concert series held across three consecutive weekends in January, in Stonnington’s best parks and gardens.
City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Steve Stefanopoulos, said the annual Sunset Sounds concert series showcases some of Australia’s best emerging talent. “It brings me great joy to see residents and visitors enjoying our beautiful green spaces and watching this talent at Sunset Sounds in their own backyard,” Mayor Stefanopoulos said. “Come along with a picnic basket and your dancing shoes for what is quickly growing into a series of not-to-be-missed events, featuring some of Australia’s finest talent.”
The first concert on Sunday 6 January at Victoria Gardens features Vaudeville Smash, a local band of three brothers and two mates carving out their own niche genre. An explosion of funk, flute, sax, synth and groove, the dance floor is sure to be packed. Vaudeville Smash will be supported by The Seven Ups.
The following weekend, on Sunday 13 January, Zimbabwean-born, Melbourne based, singer-songwriter Thando graces the stage at Central Park. The genre- bending artist had her breakout moment in 2018 with the single ‘Numb’, and has since opened for Soul crooner Leon Bridges, R&B master Maxwell and collaborated with Australian Hip Hop greats REMI and Sampa the Great. Thando will be supported by The Meltdown.
The final concert on Sunday 20 January at Malvern Gardens sees Horns of Leroy, the seven-piece punked-out band, with special guest Shannen Wick take the stage. The band is inspired by flavours from New Orleans to Fitzroy, taking street brass music to a whole new level! The Twoks will support Horns of Leroy. PBS DJs Lyndelle Wilkinson and Maddy Mac will be there spinning some tunes and getting the crowds warmed up and on their feet from 5pm.
