Dionne Warwick to attend Lexus Melbourne Cup Day
The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) is thrilled to announce five-time Grammy award winner and soul icon Dionne Warwick will attend Lexus Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington on Tuesday 6 November, 2018 as a special guest of the Club.
Best known for her hit singles Do You Know the Way to San Jose which features in the VRC’s 2018 Melbourne Cup Carnival campaign, Walk On By, and I Say A Little Prayer, the global superstar will catch all of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Day action from the Birdcage at Flemington, and will also make a separate surprise appearance as part of Cup Week.
Warwick will be in Melbourne as part of her Australian and New Zealand tour, which begins in Perth on Friday 2 November and will also see her perform in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and the Gold Coast.
Warwick said she’s excited to experience Australia’s premier raceday. “I’ve been visiting Australia since the mid-1960s but I’ve never been to the Melbourne Cup Carnival, so I’m very much looking forward to attending Lexus Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington.”
VRC Executive General Manager Customer Engagement Caroline Ralphsmith said the Club is honoured Warwick will attend Lexus Melbourne Cup Day as one of the VRC’s international guests. “Lexus Melbourne Cup Day is the jewel in the crown of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, so we’re absolutely delighted to be able to welcome a global talent like Dionne Warwick to Flemington for this spectacular event.”
Warwick’s mega-hit Do You Know the Way to San Jose, for which she received her first Grammy, is the soundtrack to the VRC’s 2018 Melbourne Cup Carnival advertising campaign.
“In the song, San Jose represents a return to something wonderful, which is what the Melbourne Cup Carnival is to Australians,” Ms Ralphsmith said. “We loved that, despite being from the 1960s, the song still has modern appeal and that everyone can enjoy its whimsical, uplifting melody.”
With a successful career spanning over fifty years, Warwick was a regular fixture in the charts with 75 hit singles and having sold over 100 million records worldwide.
A star in her own right, the soul and R&B singer has collaborated with some of the biggest heavyweights in the entertainment industry, including Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Jamie Foxx, Billy Ray Cyrus, Ne-Yo, Gladys Knight, CeeLo Green, Cyndi Lauper and many more.
Warwick’s tour will begin in Perth on Friday 2 November, before taking her to Adelaide on Saturday 3 November, Melbourne on Sunday 4 November, Sydney on Thursday 8 November and the Gold Coast on Friday 9 November, after which she will travel to New Zealand.
The VRC will officially open the Melbourne Cup Carnival on Saturday 3 November with AAMI Victoria Derby Day, followed by Lexus Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 6 November, Kennedy Oaks Day on Thursday 8 November and Seppelt Wines Stakes Day on Saturday 10 November.
