EP Release: Evalyn – Salvation
Venice Beach cult pop singer Evalyn shares her 8-track Salvation EP after teasing “Big Bad City,” “Angels,” “A Pill to Crush,” and now “Crème de la Crème.” The EP is out now on B3SCI Records.
Salvation is a wild-eyed examination of the Seven Deadly Sins and modern cult worship through a dark pop context. With its electronically sculpted, guitar-heavy take on pop, Salvation infuses sonic grandeur with an edgy vitality inspired by the big city grit of LA – from the rock-and-roll dreamland of Laurel Canyon to the glitzy sleaze of Hollywood to the jagged beauty of the ocean and mountains. In Salvation, Evalyn amplifies the notion of self-possession, both in her rule-defying approach to production and in the message at the heart of the EP:
“One of the central themes is the idea of trying to find something to save you, whether it’s religion or a cult or anything else you might worship,”Evalyn says.
“Crème de la Crème“ delivers a delicate yet determined look at gluttony, with a slightly detuned glimmering synth lead and hypnotic, fuzzed out guitar groove that counter Evalyn’s repeated assertion “I don’t wanna go through the motions.” “Crème de la Crème” follows deadly sin(gles) “A Pill to Crush” (wrath), a defeated profession of powerlessness wrapped in a psychedelic haze of bubbling synths, sullen guitars, and phased-out vocals; “Angels”(pride), a gloriously epic reverse-string-driven track and unapologetic declaration of passion for the Los Angeles way of life; and “Big Bad City” (greed), a menagerie of watery synths and gossamery vocals that slowly builds to an expansive chorus.
The follow-up to her 2017 debut Sandcastle, the EP showcases the mesmerizing vocal presence and melodic ingenuity previously glimpsed in her breakthrough feature on Louis The Child’s “Fire.” In bringing Salvation to life, Evalyn worked with L.A.-based producer Nicopop in dreaming up a darkly charged but lavishly textured sound beautifully suited to the EP’s thematic explorations.
